Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) Review
Asus has launched its new ultrabook, VivoBook 14 (X412) which is also the world’s smallest 14-inch laptop. This laptop is for the ones who look for easy portability, compactness and doing daily tasking. This is an affordable product launched by Asus which is something that other brands fail to offer in this price tag of ultrabooks. Even ultrabooks from HP and Lenovo start at Rs 60,000 or above. but, is it a worthy ultrabook purchase? Let’s check it out in the Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) review below:
Design and Display :
Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) is a compact and lightweight device which is largely built of plastic. This product comes in two colors- Peacock Blue and Coral Crush, and two classic hues- Transparent Silver and Slate Grey. The device weighs around 1.5kg and one can feel its bit hefty-ness. It is not something you expect from an ultrabook. The product has ErgoLift hinge design which brings the base up to 2 degrees of elevation. It makes typing very convenient for the users- especially if you type for long hours. On the chassis, you can see concentric textured dots. So, Asus has finally bid adieu to a matte finish. The VivoBook 14 has a decent pack of ports including a USB 3.1 Type-C, USB 3.1 Type-A, USB 2.0 Type-A, 3.5mm audio jack, HDMI and a microSD card reader.
Coming to the display, Asus VivoBook 14 packs a 14-inch Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. The display has minimal bezels around it which makes it look elegant and stylish. Asus calls it “ultra-thin bezel” and “frameless NanoEdge display” having 87% screen-to-body ratio. The display is very bright but doesn’t support sRGB color gamut to its full range. To make it better, Asus has used its own display enhancement tools including color gamut management, temperature correction, and Tru2Life video technology. Summing it up, this laptop is very easy to carry and can be fit into the backpack easily. The screen is good but doesn’t offer anything out of the space. If it would have been better, we would have liked it even more.
Performance :
The Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) has 8th generation Intel Core i5-8256U processor under the hood with 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX230. This processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. The device can easily handle the day-to-day tasks with ease like web browsing, watching movies, listening to music, and multitasking too. If you try to go heavier with your tasking, this device starts becoming shaky.
Talking about gaming, the VivoBook 14 is a great device to play casual games. It has a unique cooling mechanism which is a blower-style cooling method. On 3DMark’s Sky Diver test, Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) scored 7,529 points while on CrystalDiskMark6, it scored 1833.6 MB/s and 990.9 MB/s for sequential read and write speeds respectively.
Keyboard and Trackpad :
Talking about the keyboard, this device has a nice keyboard with 1.3mm key travel. The keys are decent in size which makes typing fast. The keyboard also helps in typing fast and thanks to its backlit nature, you can use the keyboard with ease in the dark. The trackpad has a layering of glass for smooth feedback. The trackpad features 3-finger/4-finger swipe, tapping, zoom in or out which are native Windows 10 gestures. It also has a fingerprint reader which can log you into the laptop- thanks to Windows Hello.
Battery Life :
The Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) can give you five hours of battery on a single charge. This is decent battery life and there is nothing more out-of-the-box in this device. It is just an average battery packed into it and if you spend most of your day on the laptop, then this might not entertain you.
Price and Availability:
The VivoBook 14 starts at Rs 33,990 featuring a 7th generation Intel Core i3-7020U processor with 4GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. The second model has an 8th generation Intel Core i5-8265U paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD which comes at the price of Rs 54,990. The top-end variant comes at Rs 59,990 which has NVIDIA GeForce MX230. This device is available on Flipkart India.
Final Verdict:
The Asus VivoBook 14 (X412) is a great laptop providing good value for money. It looks good and elegant and is a beautiful ultrabook which can handle your day-to-day tasking with ease. In gaming, it can handle casual games but not games like Fortnite or Apex Legends. The display is decent but could have been better if they would have provided a full range of RGB color gamut. Watching movies or listening to music with your friends in a room might give you below par performance. But, the hinge design is really amazing, the keyboard is equally decent, and so is your trackpad.
